Imphal, Nov 5 (UNI) The 19th Senior National Sepaktakraw Championship, 2008, began here today at the Khuman Lampak stadium, organised by the Sepaktakraw Federation of India (STFI) and Manipur Sepaktakraw Association.
Governor Gurbhachan Jagat, speaking during the inaugural function, said Sepaktakraw originated as a traditional game in Asian Countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippine, but today it has become an international game and has been included as a competitive event in Asian Games since the 1990 Beijing Asian Games.
''There is a bright prospect of its being included in the Olympic Games under the family of volleyball as Acrobatic volleyball as the game is fondly played in other continents - Europe, Australia, Africa, North and South America,'' he said.
The Governor said the Sepaktakraw players of Manipur are in the vanguard of the competing states in India. Manipur has become champion for 17 times consecutively in the Senior National Sepaktakraw Championships held so far.
The Governor added that the National Sepaktakraw Championship held at Imphal has provided a very good opportunity for healthy competition and will generate bonhomie, team spirit, sportsmanship, fellow feeling and oneness among the participants.
''Games teach us how to function as a team and it is team effort which leads to success,'' he added.
