Bangalore, Nov 5 (UNI) As many as two lakh houses would be given to the poor in Karnataka under the Ashraya Scheme by year end with posession of another 13 lakh units scheduled to be handed over by 2013, Housing Minister S N Krishnaiah Setty said today.
Speaking to newspersons here, he said the government had issued directions to all panchayat secretaries to send the list of beneficiaries in their villages by end of this month.
The existing system of selecting beneficiaries for Ashraya houses by Panchayat members had delayed its implementation and there was a growing demand from the legislators to do away the present system.
The Minister said he would pilot a bill in the next Assembly session, empowering Legislators to head the committee clearing the list of beneficiaries of Ashraya Houses.
Mr Setty, who also holds Muzarai Portfolio, said the government would take up renovation of about 50 Hindu temples with financial assistance from US-based Non Resident Indians hailing from the State.
The State Government also had plans to spend over Rs 180 crore in three phases to improve facilities for pilgrims at Subramanya Temple in Kukke in Daxina Kannada District.
