Lucknow, Nov 5: In a sensational act,police gunned down in an encounter a criminal involved in a dacoity of looting valuables worth more than Rs 4 lakh from a house of a renowned jeweller in the state capital after strangling to death a 65-year-old woman of the house.
Additional Superintendent of Police(ASP) Paresh Pandey here said that the police received the information about the dacoity at the residence of Khunkhunji jewellers in the wee hours today and later within 30 minutes in the encounter near Kalakothi in Kuriyaghat area one unidentified criminal was shot dead but the two others managed to flee.
Police have recovered some looted jewellery, 500 GM of gold dust and Rs 31,000 cash from the possession of the dead criminal.
The encounter took place just 100 meters from the house under Thakurganj police station where the dacoity took place.
According to Om Prakash Agarwal, owner of the renowned Khunkhunji Jewellers the criminal, three robbers three in number, entered the house after mid-night and sprayed some gas due to which all the family members fell unconscious.
When Usha Rani (65), wife of Om Prakash who woke before all the family members tried to resist the criminals, she was strangulated to death.
Police officials said that the body of the criminal was yet to be identified and a manhunt have been launched in and around the state capital to nab the other culprits.
Police acted promptly in the case, as there were enough policemen just near the place of dacoity due to the Chhat festival at the Gomti river banks.
Khunkhunji are the biggest jewellers of the state capital and they have several shops. Last year, a Rs 4 crore dacoity had taken place in the Bhutnath market shop of the Khunkhunji Jewellers.
This would be the second crime against the jewellers of the state capital within two days. Yesterday, the body of the 21-year-old son of the owner of the R K Jewellers here was found at Barabanki with bullet shots.
