B R Chopra, a legend
Baldev Raj Chopra popularly known as B R Chopra was born on April 22, 1914 in Ludhiana, Punjab. He was a director and producer of Bollywood movies and television serials. His brother Yash Chopra, son Ravi Chopra and nephew Aditya Chopra are also directors in the film industry.
He received an MA from Lahore University in English Literature. His interest in movies started as a movie journalist. After the partition of British India into India and Pakistan in 1947, he moved to Delhi, and then to Bombay (Mumbai). In 1955, BR formed his own production house, BR Films. His first movie for this production house was the highly successful 'Naya Daur'.
BR was instrumental in developing the career of singer Mahendra Kapoor, and employed Mahendra in most of his movies. (Director-producer Yash Chopra, a brother of BR, cast Mahendra Kapoor's son in 'Fasle'.) BR's foray into television led to Mahabharat, one of the most successful TV serials in Indian television history.
He was a recipient of many awards like Phalke Ratna Award by the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy (2008), Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (2003), Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1998), Filmfare Best Director Award for the movie, Kanoon (1960).
