UDA declares candidates for Mizo polls

Aizawl, Nov 4 (UNI) The United Democratic Alliance(UDA), a three-party pre-poll alliance, today announced its candidates for the December two Mizoram Assembly elections The UDA would contest all the 40 seats in the Assembly, 38 of which have been announced.

Of these, 37 seats are divided between Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) and Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) while the remaining would go to Zoram Kuthnathawktu Pawl (Mizoram Farmers' Association).

The UDA, comprising the MPC and Lalduhoma-led ZNP and the Farmers' Association, had been floated by 86-year-old former Mizoram Chief Minister Brigadier (retired) T Sailo to take on the ruling Mizo National Front party and largest opposition party Congress.

While Mr Sailo will contest from Aizawl West-I constituency, ZNP's chief and former IPS officer Lalduhoma will contest from two seats, Aizawl West-I and Tuivawl.

UDA is projecting Mr Sailo as the chief ministerial candidate, while Mr Lalduhoma will be made the deputy chief minister, if the party is voted to power.

The candidates include two sitting MLAs, Lalduhoma (ZNP) and Sailothanga Sailo (MPC), three ex-ministers, two ex-MLAs, one former speaker and one former deputy speaker.

The other two biggest forces, MNF and Congress are yet to announce their candidates while smaller party BJP has announced that it would contest eight seats.

As many as five persons have announced their candidature on independent tickets among whom is former Mizoram chief secretary M Lalmanzuala.
