Madurai, Oct 4 (UNI) One person was killed and two others were injured when police opened fire to quell a mob that attempted to attack policemen during a roadroko agitation at E Kottaipatti village under Elumalai police limits in Usilampatti taluk today.
Police said the trouble started when a 300-member mob, reportedly supporters of Puthiya Tamilagam (PT) party leader Dr K Krishnasamy, attempted to picket vehicular traffic at E Kottaipatti to condemn the recent attack on Krishnasamy's convoy.
On information, a police contingent led by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Madurai range, Krishnamurthy, rushed to the spot and persuaded the protestors to withdraw the agitation.
They, however, refused to disperse and laid a seize to the Police Officer and started pelting stones on the policemen.
They also attacked them with sticks and stones, in which at least nine police personnel were wounded.
When the situation went out of control, police opened fire on the protestors, killing Suresh (25) on the spot and injuring two others.
Additional police force rushed to the village and brought the situation under control.
The body of the deceased was, meanwhile, being brought to the Government Rajaji Hospital, here for post-mortem.
Senior police officials were camping in the village. Though the situation was tense, it was under control, police said.
Bus services to several pockets in Usilampatti taluk was suspended, following the violence.
Police have stepped up patrolling in the communally sensitive villages to prevent any untoward incident.
Members of a community, meanwhile, hurled low-intensity country bombs on the houses of another community in Elumalai village. The detail of the attack was not known immediately.
