Mumbai, Nov 4 (UNI) Lakhs of people today participated in the Chhat Puja held peacefully at various places in the city amidst tight security in view of the recent anti-north Indian campaign by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
The pujas were conducted at various places, including Juhu Chowpatty, which witnessed a crowd of upto five lakhs, Bandra Bandstand, Dadar Shivaji park, Aksa beach, Marve beach and Malad.
City police have made elaborate security arrangements with five CCTV cameras installed in Juhu beach area including S V Road, V M Road junction, Mithibai College, opposite Tulip Star hotel and Palm Grove hotel on Juhu Tara Road opposite Juhu Chowki.
The State Reserve Police (SRP) and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) have also been deployed to reinforce regular police forces. A central control room have also been set up at the police chowki on Juhu beach along with four public address systems.
Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil and police top brass inspected security arrangements at Girgaum Chowpatty in south Mumbai and Juhu beach late afternoon.
Minority Commission chairman Naseem Siddiqui, Congress state spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam and Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Kripa Shankar Singh were also present on the occasion.
It may be recalled that police had asked the organisers of the festival to stick to religious events and avoid entertainment or political programmes during the festival.
