Panaji, Nov 4 (UNI) Preservation and protection of cultural heritage and ecology is very important in a state like Goa, known world over for its beauty and tourist destinations, Governor Shivinder Singh Sidhu said here today.
Speaking at the meeting of Goa Environment Protection Council (GEPC) at Raj Bhavan today, the governor stressed on the importance of protecting and preserving the natural environment for the benefit and prosperity of people.
He expressed concern over the global warming and wanted to know about its impact on the beaches and measures that have to be taken to prevent any ill-effects. It was informed during the meeting that the state Government has taken soft and hard measures to arrest the erosion of beaches. however, it was felt that more efforts should also be made interalia, to procure financial support from Asian Development Programme for these projects.
The governor was keen on rain water harvesting programme and highlighted the need to preserve water in view of present shortage of potable water in the country.
The Governor said that educative programme should be taken up at village level to change the mind set of people and enlist their participation in the garbage disposal programme.
Minister for Power and Environment Alex Sequeira also highlighted the role of educational institutions in this regard, as today's students are responsible citizens of tomorrow.
