Shillong, Nov 4: Former Meghalaya Chief Minister E K Mawlong's eldest son George B Lyngdoh has decided to contest the forthcoming Umroi by-election from the United Democratic Party (UDP). The Umroi constituency fell vacant after Mr Mawlong passed away on Oct 18.

In a statement issued here, Mr Lyngdoh said he decided to throw his hat in the political arena after the UDP nominated him as its candidate.

Meanwhile, the Nationalist Congress Party, which is backing the UDP-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance government has decided not to field any candidate.

The bye-election is expected to be held early next year.
