Barasat, Nov 04 (UNI) A group of farmers demonstrated in front of the SBI branch at Kadambagachhi under Barasat police station in North 24 Parganas, alleging that the bank had not sanctioned agricultural loans.
The farmers, who organised the agitation yesterday, alleged that they had sought loans from the bank three months back but the branch authorities did not respond to their appeal so far.
The farmers said the bank authorities were reluctant to grant loans to the applicants as they had failed to repay their earlier loans. However, the debt had to be written of owing to the Centre's debt waiver policy as announced in the last Union Budget.
Meanwhile, officers of different banks stated that nationalised bank branches were reluctant to grant loans to those farmers who had earlier failed to repay their loans and who were subsequently waived from loan refund.
