No nomination on day 1 of UP RS polls: 2 industrialists seeks papers

Lucknow, Nov 3 (UNI) No nomination papers were filed on the opening day for the biennial elections to 10 seats of the Rajya Sabha to be held on November 21.

However, 44 nomination papers were taken today by different candidates of the political parties including two by industrial houses.

The election process for the biennial polls started today with the issuance of the notification by the Election Commission.

According to sources, the highest nomination papers numbering 21 were taken by the ruling BSP leaders followed by 12 by the Samajwadi Party, 5 by the Congress, 2 the BJP and 4 independents.

The two nomination papers of the independents taken by the industrial house include one by former Union Minister and industrialist Kamal Morarka while another one was from a big industrial house.

The nomination papers were provided free of cost by the EC but Re 1 is charged from them for the MLA list along with the nomination papers.

The last date for filing of the nominations is November 11, for scrutiny, the next day and last date of withdrawal of names is November 14.

The Rajya Sabha members whose term were expiring are: Rajnath Singh, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi (both BJP), Amar Singh, Saahid Siddique, Abu Asim Azmi, Uday Pratap Singh (all SP), Esam Singh, Veer Singh, Gandhi Azad (all BSP) and Akhilesh Das (Congress). However, seats of Esam Singh and Akhilesh Das fell vacant earlier.
