Karur, Nov 2: Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) has planned to undertake afforestation in about one lakh acre by 2012 for meeting its biomass requirements, as 35,000 acres had been covered and every year around 15,000 acres were being added, according to the TNPL Managing Director Mohammed Nazimuddin.
Speaking in a function at TNPL premises at Kagithapuram near here on October 31, Mr Nazimuddin said through such a venture the TNPL could ensure that it would have access to raw materials in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. The move would also ensure that barren lands be converted into fertile ones, he added.
The MD said the plantation programme covered ten villages.
About 25 species of saplings were planted and the saplings were raised in special nurseries for six months, he added.
