14th Kolkata Film Festival to kick off on November 10

Kolkata, Nov 1 (UNI) The recently released movies all over the globe will grab a lion's share in the melange of 276 movies on the menu for the 14th Kolkata Film Festival commencing November 10, said West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee here today.

Announcing the list of films for the coming festival, he said, '' Altogether 276 movies will be screened during the week-long festival, out of which the Indian entries will be 17. Besides, there will be 44 short-films, eight documentaries and seven children's films. The total number of foreign films drawn from 62 countries will be 100, out of which the Latin American films will be the majority. '' The budget for the festivities has been pegged at Rs 1.40 crore with the state government contributing 50 per cent to it, while the rest would be borne by various sponsors, he said.

While expenses like providing hospitality to the guests would be met by the sponsors, the West Bengal government would spend towards procuring the films, he explained.

With the inaugural film ''Red Like The Sky (2007)'', an Italian film, directed by Cristiano Bortone, poised to set the festive mood, packages like ''Great Masters'', ''Celloloid Diamonds'' and ''Centenary Tribute'' will be memorable milestones during the journey through reel-lives.

Moreover, restored films of Satyajit Ray - ''Aparajito'', ''Parash Pathar'', ''Teen Kanya'', ''Two'' (short film) and ''Jay Baba Felunath'' will be shown during the festival.

The Chief Minister informed that ''Two'', directed by Ray, bore a special attraction for the film lovers since it was never screened before, saying there would be a special package christened ''Remembering Ray'' that would feature the Hollywood movies adored by the great Indian film-director.

Various short filmmakers would also get the chance to showcase their works during the festival at the Bangla Academy, while there would be ''film market'' for marketing the movies all over the world, Mr Bhattacharjee stated.

He further said actress Nandita Das would mark her presence during the festival, adding other prominent film-personalities in other states had expressed their inability to attend the festival owing to their pre-occupations.

So far, 2,500 delegates have been registered for the festival.
