Kerala: POABS sets up organic products lab

Kochi, Oct 31: Kerala-based organic plantations major POABS Organic Estate today said it has set up a state-of-the-art laboratory complex at Nelliampathy in Palakkad district to produce organic inputs round the year, as part of its efforts to promote organic farming.

Built at a cost of Rs 25 million, the complex, described as a major bio lab in the country in the field of organic farming, was expected to commence the production by January, 2009, POABS Director Abraham Jacob said.

The commissioning of the laboratory would ensure availability of quality organic inputs, including bio-fertilisers and pest control products, Mr Jacob said.

The products of the lab would include azospirillum, azotobacter, rhizobium, phosphorous solubilizing micro organisms and bio-control agents like Trichoderma, Pseudomonas and bio-pesticides like Beauveria, Verticillium and Metarhizium.

The complex, which would apply for approval of the Department of Bio Technology (DBT) and Department of Science&Technology (DST) of the Central Government, would impart training in all aspect of organic farming to personnel working in public, private, corporate and social organizations connected with organic farming activities.

The POABS estate at Nelliampathy was a 100 per cent export-oriented plantation producing tea, coffee, cardamom and pepper.
