K'taka: Jail inmates assault suspected terrorists

Mangalore, Oct 31: Two arrested suspect terrorists lodged in the Sub-jail here on judicial custody were assaulted by six inmates in the jail last evening.

The injured persons- Fakir Bawa and Rafique , recently arrested in the city in connection with having links with the Indian Mujahideen (IM) outfit and on judicial remand have been immediately admitted to government Wenlock hospital where their condition was stated to be 'out of danger.' According to the sources, the six member gang in the jail snatched the keys of the cell from the jail staff where the duo were kept and assaulted them with rod, stick and stones on their head, shoulder and neck.

The gang also alleged to have abused the duo for 'bombing Hindu temples.' A case had been registered with the Barke police.

The present attack on the inmates of the sub-jail here was the sixth incident within a span of five weeks time after Bajrang Dal leader Mahendra Kumar was lodged in the jail.

It was also alleged that the group belonging to Bajrang Dal lodged in the jail have committed the attack, the sournces said.

Meanwhile, the judicial custody of the two suspected terrorist Fakir Bawa and Rafique arrested from the undivided Daxina Kannada district was extended by a city court till November 12.

The policemen of the district had arrested Fakir Bawa from Moolur in Udupi district and Rafique from Bolanthoor village of Bantwala taluk, on October 16.

They later raided some places in Chikmagalur district and recovered tools, bomb-making equipments, explosives and others.

The policemen had requested the court for the extension of their remand, as investigations into their role in terrorism-related activities has not yet been concluded.
