Chennai, Oct 30 (UNI) Police burst a few rounds of teargas shells to disperse a group of people, which pelted stones at AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa's car at Pasumpon in southern Ramanathapuram district today.
Police sources told UNI that the incident occurred at Pasumpon when Ms Jayalalithaa reached there to pay obeisance to freedom fighter Muthuramalinga Thevar on the occasion of 'Thevar Jayanthi', marking his birth centenary celebrations.
She returned from the dias to launch a free meals programme organised by a party functionary. After she left the place, a group of people, all AIADMK workers enraged over denial of entry into the venue, created a hue and cry.
As they were not allowed to have a glimpse of their leader, there was pushing and jostling. At one state, the crowd became unmanageable.
In the melee, some people pelted stones, injuring two policemen.
One of the stones hit Ms Jayalalithaa's car, damaging the windscreens. However, she was not in the car at the time of the incident.
When the situation threatened to go out of control, police burst teargas shells to disperse the crowd, leading to tension in Pasumpon, where tight security was put in place in view of the visit of prominent political leaders to pay homage on the occasion of Thevar's anniversary.
Though police claimed that the trouble was created by AIADMK partymen, Ms Jayalalithaa speaking at the function, alleged that the attack was instigated by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
After winding up her speech, Ms Jayalalithaa left for Chennai.
Today's incident comes a day after Ms Jayalalithaa submitted a petition to police and moved Madras High Court seeking enhanced security, in the wake of a threatening letter received at her Poes Garden residence for her stand on the Sri lankan Tamils issue, vis-a-vis the banned LTTE.
