Puducherry, Oct 30 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Puducherry today urged the administration to take immediate steps to declare November one as the Independence day of Puducherry and the tricolour be hoisted.
In a statement here, Party Secretary V Perumal also urged the administration to initiate stringent measures to prevent illegal sand quarrying from the Sankarabharani river here.
The ground water level was being depleted due to the indiscriminate sand quarrying resulting in the scarcity of drinking water, he added.
Meanwhile, the French India Puducherry Pradesha Viduthalai Kaala Makkal Nala Narppani Iyyakkam, the movement working for the welfare of the people who opted Indian citizenship at the time of merger of Puducherry(Pondicherry) with the Indian Union today, sent fax messages to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, AICC President Sonia Gandhi and Union Minister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs V Narayanasamy to take immediate steps to declare November one as the Independence day of Puducherry and to celebrate it properly instead of the present August 16.
