Chennai, Oct 28: A day after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi appealed to the people to contribute their mite to mitigate the sufferings of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka, financial assistances started pouring in, with the Chief Minister himself opening the account with a contribution of Rs 10 lakh. After Mr Karunanidhi had announced last evening that the state government wanted to meet the immediate need of the Lankan Tamils for food, clothes and medicines and appealed to the people to contribute generously, DMK Central Ministers and State Ministers made their contributions on Tuesday, Oct 28 morning.
The Chief Minister opened the account with a personal contribution of Rs 10 lakh, followed by his ministerial collegues, who had contributed their month's salary of Rs 22,000 to Rs 25,000 and DMK central Ministers pitching in Rs 50,000 each. Till this afternoon, a sum of Rs 26.20 lakh has been collected, an official release said.
Those who contributed for the relief fund included Union Ministers T R Baalu, A Raja, S S Palanimackam, S Ragupathy, Venkatapathy and Radhika Selvi and State Ministers Arcot N Veerasamy, M K Stalin, Duraimurugan, K Ponmudi, E V Velu, K K S S R Ramachandran, Thangam Thennarasu and Vellakoil Saminathan.
Mr A C Shanmugam of MGR Medical University contributed Rs five lakh, followed by a Labour Union, Rs three lakh, and Lyricist Vairamuthu, Rs one lakh, the release said.
