Baramulla, Oct 26 (UNI) One person was killed and ten others were wounded, three with bullet wounds, when security forces opened fire to disperse pro-freedom demonstrators in the old town near here today.
Official sources said residents of the old town took to streets this morning in protest against alleged damage to window panes and beating up of youths by the security forces on Friday night after the town observed strike on a call given by the Coordination Committee (CC) spearheading the present agitation in the valley.
The demonstrators, raising pro freedom slogans, alleged that security forces and police damaged window panes and beat local resident on Friday night.
However, when the demonstrators tried to march towards the main town and Srinagar-Uri highway, security forces and police resorted to lathicharge.
Later teargas shells were fired which too had no affect on the demonstrators who were regrouping again and pelting stones on security forces.
Security forces opened fire to disperse them in which four youths were injured. One of the youth idenified as Irfan Ahmad later died before he could be shifted to hospital.
Seven others were injured in the stone pelting and teargas shelling, sources said The situation in the entire town was tense, they said adding that more security forces and police personnel were rushed to the area.
Complete shut down was observed yesterday against the security force action on Friday night.
