Margao, Oct 26 (UNI) Riding on a fine brace by Nigerian Renty Martin, defending Champion Dempo Sports club defeated Air India 3-1 and gained full points in the ONGC I-League football Championship match at the Nehru stadium at Fatorda today.
For Dempo, goals came through Renty Martin in the 39th and 80th minute, Climax Lawrence in the 57th minute. For Air India, Ravinder Singh reduced the margin in the 60th minute.
With this win, Dempo increased their points tally to 6 from three outings with two wins and a loss. Air India remained on 8 points from 5 outings with two wins, two draws and a defeat.
Dempo, who had better share of exchanges dominating the first half throughout, took time to settle down as their forwards were not accurate to convert the chances into goals.
Dempo came near scoring as early as in the 13th minute of the first half when Renty Martin intitiated a move and passed the ball to Climax Lawrence, whose powerpacked shot was smartly blocked by rival goalkeeper Anup Debnath.
Then in the 19th minute Dempo's Anthony Pereira from the right flank sent a cross pass to better placed Mboyo Iyomi, whose header went wide.
Dempo shot into the lead in the 39th minute off a penalty goal by Renty Martin. Refrree P K Bose awarded a spot kick in favour of Dempo when Mboyo passed to Renty Martin, who was brought down by Air India Goalkeeper Anup in penalty area. Renty himself converted the the spot kick correctly to make it 1-0.
Inspired by a lead, Dempo continued to attack and increased their lead in the 57th minute through Climax Lawrence, who neatly headed in a floating cross pass given by Anthony Pereira.
Down by two goals, Air India accelerated the pace of their game and reduced the margin in the 60th minute through Ravinder Singh off a direct free kick to make it 2-1.
Renty Martin completed the tally, scoring third goal for his side and his (Brace) in the 80th minute when Mboyo initiated a move and passed to Renty, who shot over the head of the rival goalkeeper which found the net to make it 3-1 and sealed the fate of Air India.
Dempo's Midfielder Climax Lawrence was today adjudged the man of the match for his fine performance.
