PSB lifts Surjit Hockey memorial Trophy

Jalandhar, Oct 25 (UNI) Punjab and Sind bank lifted the glittering Surjit Hockey Memorial Trophy, beating the star studded Javed Hockey Club, Gojra (Pakistan) in the final held at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here today.

The lone goal of the match came of the stick of Rajwinder Singh in the 50th minute of the play.

Besides the Silver Jubilee Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Trophy, the winners also pocketed the prize money of Rs 2.25 lakh. The runners up were presented a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

In 13 appearances in the finals of this tournament, PSB have won it nine times, including today's victory.

After a lackluster first half, the bankmen went ahead in the 50th minute of play when forward Rajwinder Singh latched onto a pass from his skipper Mandeep Singh and beats the Pakistani Club goalkeaper with an angular shot to put his team ahead.

Stung by the goal, Javed Club launched a series of attacks on the rival's citadel and even earned four penalty corners. However, the PSB goalkeeper Gurvinder Singh thwarted all the moves of the rivals. The bankmen earned only one penalty corner.

Pakistani international Mohd Saqlain of Javed Club was declared the man of the tournament and was awarded a cash prize of Rs 25,000.
