Guwahati, Oct 25 (UNI) Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today led a beautification drive here where school children are replacing the mundane white paint of government walls with bright paintings.
All compound walls of government buildings would be painted with colourful figures and sketches under this drive launched by the Guwahati Development Department (GDD), with private parties to be also approached to permit similar painting of their walls. These sketches would supplement the natural beauty of the city and further Guwahati's position as the gateway of the North East, Mr Gogoi said, who also filled colours in already-drawn sketches on walls of Nehru Park here.
GDD Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma and noted artists of the state also participated at the launch.
The walls of government buildings from Jalukbari to Raj Bhavan would be painted in the first phase, Dr Sharma informed, adding the project would be extended to all major routes of the city depending on the success of the pilot project.
The paintings would mostly depict the state's culture and would not be too preachy so as to maintain their aesthetic beauty, the minister said.
Besides this beautification measure, the GDD minister announced that a mechanized garbage disposal system would be launched on October 29.
