Torrential rains claim five lives in Kannyakumari
Kannyakumari, Oct 24 (UNI) The toll in the heavy rains which have been pounding this popular tourist town, rose to five with the death of a 23 year-old woman at Kothayadi area today.
According to the District Collectorate, the woman died as she suffered an electric shock. She was a worker at a brick kiln.
The body was sent to Government General Hospital for post mortem.
Four people had been killed in the incessant rains during the last four days.
Following the inclement weather the flow of tourists to this town especially to the 'Triveni sangham' spot where three seas meet, has come down to a trickle.
Fishermen have also not been putting out to sea for their daily catch. Salt production and brick manufacturing works have also been hit.
Crops ready for harvest on 14 acre of land were submerged while schools and colleges were asked to declare a holiday by District Collector Jyothi Nirmala.
