Kochi, Oct 24 (UNI) CPM Politburo member Brinda Karat, MP, today accused the US of trying to build a NATO-like alliance in Asia with India in the forefront.
Addressing a CPM rally outside the Southern Naval Command headquarters here this evening, to protest against the ongoing joint Indo-US naval exercises off the west coast codenamed 'Malabar', Ms Karat said joint exercises could turn into joint action by the two countries later.
Alleging that such exercises were against the national interest, Ms Karat challenged the Defence Minister to issue a catergorical statement that the UPA Government would not allow refuelling facilities for US warships and aircraft on Indian soil.
Stating that the naval exercises with the US represented a shift in the independent foreign policy of India, the CPM leader said through the strategic Indo-US defence agreement, the US was trying to make India an ally in its global and military strategy.
Declaring the Left parties' resolve to resist such moves, Ms Karat said in the past also, these parties had been able to resist the anti-people and pro-US policies of the UPA Government.
Dr Sebastian Pual, MP, and Kerala Fisheries Minister S Sarma were among those present at the protest meeting.
