Lucknow, Oct 23 (UNI) The Mulayam Singh Yadav led-Samajwadi Party (SP) today termed its three-day-long 'Ghera Dalo, Dera Dalo' agitational programme against the wrong policies of the Mayawati regime a 'complete success' amid various attempts by the state government to foil it.
The boisterous protest, called by the SP activists across the state, has concluded with the participation of as many as 50 lakh party leaders, workers, activists and comman-man, Mr Yadav said.
The participation of advocates, traders, farmers, women and youth in large numbers should be taken as a warning by Ms Mayawati to begin the countdown of her rule in the state, he quipped.
''The police lathicharge upon the peaceful demonstrators reflects the 'uneasiness' Ms Mayawati is going through. It is all a 'sarkari gundagardi','' Mr Yadav alleged.
The illegal detention of the SP activists across UP was another act that proves the 'dictatorship' of Ms Mayawati, he charged.
As per reports from Varanasi, over 12 SP activists sustained injuries when police resorted to lathicharge during the last day of the 'Ghera Dalo, Dera Dalo' agitation at the western gate of the collectorate, where the mob manhandled Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vijay Prakash.
The police also detained as many as 200 protestors from the spot.
It had first resorted to water cannon to quell the mob, but on failing to control them, the cops lathicharged upon them.
The SP sources, however, claimed that a total of 56 peaceful agitators sustained severe wounds in police lathicharge in Varanasi.
District president of Varanasi Akhilesh Mishra, Dr P K Yadav, Veerendra Singh and Satish Fauji were among those, who became victim of the police action and a similar police lathicharge in Jhansi wounded 12 party activists.
