Lok Sabha okays Bill to increase punishment for spurious drugs

New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) A bill enhancing the minimum imprisonment for manufacturing and selling spurious drugs today received Parliamentary approval with the Lok Sabha passing it by voice vote without discussion.

The Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The Bill known as the Drug and Cosmetics (Amendment) Bill, 2008, moved by Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, however retained the maximum punishment of life imprisonment for the offence.

The legislation raises the quantum of fine from Rs 10,000 to Rs 10 lakh or three times the value of drugs confiscated, whichever is more.
