Punjab Cong MLAs ask Speaker to safeguard their privileges

Chandigarh, Oct 22 (UNI) The opposition Punjab Congress MLAs today demanded appropriate action against all those responsible for "breach of privilege and infringements" of the rights of elected members of the Vidhan Sabha.

In a petition submitted to Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon, the MLAs claimed that there was continuous breach of privilege and infringements of rights of the elected members of thet House by the defeated candidates, who were functioning as 'halqa' in-charges in the constituencies of opposition members with the active support of the government machinery. The elected representatives of the people of the Congress party were being ignored, the petition stated while pointing out that ruling party MLA's were being fully associated with the developmental works, disbursement of grants in their respect assembly segments.

The petition signed by 16 Opposition MLAs was submitted by a deputation led by Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.

The SAD-BJP Government had adopted an unprincipled methodology of bypassing and ignoring the elected members of the opposition in their respective constituencies, the petition stated. The ruling party had nominated as 'Halqa' or constituency incharges those SAD-BJP candidates who were defeated in the assembly elections, the petition said while claiming that it was through these persons that the government had preferred to get all developmental works executed.
