HC calls to regulate Muslim marriages
Kochi, Oct 22 (UNI) The Kerala High Court today observed in an order that a legislation for establishing bodies at Central and Regional Levels to regulate and supervise the sanctity of marriage and divorce among the Muslim community was ''a need of the hour''.
A Division Bench comprising Mr Justices Kurian Poulose and Harun Al Rasheed also said, ''we appeal to the concerned within the community, administrative authority and the government to study the problems of the helpless and destitute women and children among the Muslim community and bestow thought on the means and ways to alleviate their problems.'' In India, Muslim males had no restriction on marrying women and subsequently pronounce'talaq' but this freedom is not there in countries like Pakistan and Iraq, the court said.
The observation was made while disposing a petition filed by a K A Sayed Ali, challenging an order of the family court in Thrissur.
