SSS prevents entry of vehicles in support of their demand
Kolhapur, Oct 21 (UNI) In a unique kind of agitation, the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) has barred vehicles from outside to enter the district for cane-crushing until their demand for better price for the crop is fulfilled.
The Sanghatana activists yesterday assembled near Tearwad village in Shirol tehsil of the district and prohibited two trucks loaded with cane.
The activists charged that the sugar factory in the tehsil had so far failed to pay final instalment to the farmers for the crop crushed last year.
They warned that they would not allow the vehicles to enter the village until their payment is made.
The SSS chief MLA Raju Shetty had last week threatened to stall the current crushing season if the state government and the sugar factories fail to pay Rs 1,800 per tonne for the cane producers.
