Special literacy campaign for women in Coimbatore
Coimbatore, Oct 21: Collector V Palanikumar has appealed to the field staff in the Valarkalvi scheme to put in the best of their efforts to make the 100-day special literacy campaign for women a success. Reviewing the implementation of the Valarkalvi scheme, Mr.Palanikumar emphasised the need for special efforts to ensure literacy for women and pointed out that for the benefit of workers and rural women, schools were functioning in rural areas in the evening.
He also exhorted the field-level staff and co-ordinators to ensure that the infrastructure procured for the Valarkalvi centres were of good quality. The Collector pointed out that there were 956 Valarkalvi centres in the district, which were offering basic literacy and continuing education for those in the age group of 15 to 35.
In the first phase, 1,20,011 persons were identified. Evening classes were conducted for their benefit.
These centres also functioned as study centres between 7 am and 9 am.
