Security tightened in Imphal after attack on CM's residence

Imphal, Oct 21 (UNI) In the wake of repeated attacks on the official residence of Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh by cadres of the proscribed People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), District Magistrate, Imphal West, A Ibocha Singh today promulgated prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC.

Assembly of more than five persons and carrying of firearms has been disallowed in the state capital.

The people have been asked to take prior permission for carrying out processions for marriages or religious functions.

The DM also banned the use and the sale of crackers in view of the law and order situation in the city areas.

Meanwhile, the police also beefed up security near the Chief Minister's complex and the city areas.

The latest attack came on Sunday night when PREPAK cadres threw a bomb near the gate of the Chief Minister.

However, no one has been arrested so far in this connecion, police said.

The government has decided to station more security personnel in the vicinity of the Chief Minister's residence.

DGP Y Joykumar said the Chief Minister's residence and the Raj Bhawan were highly vulnerable as both complexes were adjacent to the busy National Highway 39 and there were too many high buildings nearby.

Frisking thousands of vehicles which pass through the main roads, especially the highway, cannot be done and the state police had temporarily stopped movement of vehicles near the Chief Minister's residence which caused hardships to the people.

The Manipur police has decided to conduct aerial surveys and install close circuit television cameras in the vulnerable and VIP areas.

At night time barricades are put up on one side of the road and vehicles are allowed only on the other side.

All the routes coming to the Chief Minister's residence are being monitored and security personnel are stationed.
