According to reliable sources, the tunnel escape plan was detected by the cyber cell system of the police here which intercepted the coversation between two lifers jailed for espionage, with their accomplices apparently living outside the country.

The tunnel which was six feet deep and three feet wide, was being dug for quite sometime, with the help of spades, which were discovered under a cover of grass and weeds, sources said.

DGP Jails Dr John V George when contacted, conceded that ''a deep pit'' was found dug up in the barrack.

The condemned prisoners, including Sanjiv Kumar, accused of wiping out his father-in-law MLA Relu Ram Punia with his family and Dharmpal a resident of Sonepat, two spies Masood Akhtar and Mohammed Salim imprisoned for life, were staying with two other dreaded prisoners in the barrack from where the tunnel was being dug.

After the cyber cell alerted the Central jail authorities a few days ago, senior officials from the district police visited the spot along with the jail staff and exposed the conspiracy hatched by the prisoners to escape.

The jail authorities, according to sources, have started investigation into how the digging took place unhindered so far.
