Mohali, Oct 21 (UNI) Chairman of the national selection committee Krishnamachari Srikkanth hailed India's massive 320-run win over Australia in the second Test here today describing it fantastic and adding ''We've beaten them fair and square,''.
''It was one of the best performances I have seen. Simply fantastic. This team has the potential to get even better. Beating Australia by such a comprehensive margin is a big achievement,'' Srikkanth said.
Srikkanth felt it was unfair to the Indians to label this Aussie side a ''weak'' one. ''You cannot take away the credit from our boys. They have just beaten the best team in the world. They played aggressive cricket right from the very beginning and never gave the Australians a chance,'' he added.
The former India captain paid tribute to Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership skills.
''His approach is a simple one,'' he said of a man who bats in much the same fashion that Cheeka did in his heydays. ''He's also very positive and that rubs off on the team. Most of all, what is not so evident is his cricketing intelligence and the frame of mind he puts this team into is amazing.'' ''That quality makes a huge difference and Australia were on the back foot from very early in this match. They never got the chance to make a comeback here,'' he conceded.
So did that mean Dhoni was in the frame already for the job on a regular basis in Tests, having won both his games as stand-in captain? ''Yaar, at least today let us celebrate this win. Next question,'' Srikkanth replied back.
