Chennai, Oct 20: On Sunday, Oct 19 Dayanidhi Maran the former Union Minister submitted his symbolic resignation to show his solidarity with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) over the Tamil issue in Sri Lanka. Maran met the DMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday and submitted his resignation. This was his first meeting with Karunanidhi since his exit from the Union Cabinet after a family rift in 2007.
"I have handed over my resignation letter to the TN Chief Minister. I would also like to voice solidarity with the all the DMK MPs in raising the issue to stop the Sri Lankan Navy from killing of innocent Tamils. I think all of us are of the same view and I have full trust in the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh," Dayanidhi Maran said.
The Maran brothers have made several failed attempts to meet Karunanidhi since the family rift came out in the open in 2007. But sources within DMK say that even after this meeting there is hardly any chance for reconciliation and Karunanidhi granted the meeting only to show that the Tamil cause was bigger than the family rift.
Meanwhile, the DMK's focus is on Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee's visit to Colombo. So far 14 DMK members have resigned from Lok Sabha including seven union ministers. The resignation letters are dated Oct 29 when the fortnight's deadline given by the DMK MPs to the Centre to halt Sri Lankan troops' offensive against LTTE expires.
