Port workers seige Collectorate over diverting fertiliser imports
Kakinada, Oct 20 (UNI) Over 1,000 striking port workers today laid seige to the Collectorate here, criticising the Andhra Pradesh government for diverting the fertiliser imports from the traditional Anchorage port to the privatised Deep-water port.
A delegation, led by Port Steel Barge Workers Union President Vanamadi Veerababu, met District Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi and requested him to intervene into the issue to render justice to them.
In a memorandum to the Collector, they said despite clear cut assurances, the traditional cargos such as Iron ore, sugar, wheat and fertilisers were being diverted to the Deep-water port in a systematic manner, much to the detriment of the interests of the Anchorage port and thousands of workers dependent on it.
Later, they told mediapersons that they would not allow the Deep-water port management to play havoc with the lives of thousands of families depending on the Anchorage port.
