Mawlong laid to rest
Shillong, Oct 20 (UNI) No gun-salute and reversed arms for former Meghalaya Chief Minister EK Mawlong, who was laid to rest here today in a simple funeral.
Thousands of mourners were present at the residence of Mr Mawlong and bade him tearful adieu.
The family members of the former chief minister had refused offers for a state funeral at home saying that he lived a life of a common man hence he needs to be treated as a common man during the funeral too.
Mr Mawlong, 62, who served as Chief Minister from March 2000 to December 2001, died at Shillong Civil Hospital after a protracted illness on Saturday.
Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy and his cabinet colleagues besides Leader of Opposition, DD Lapang laid floral wreaths on the coffin draped with the United Democratic Party flag.
The former chief minister, a senior leader of the UDP had also served as the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 1988 and was later inducted as a minister in the then BB Lyngdoh ministry in 1989.
