TN: Transgenders are too humans, says Salma
Tiruchirapalli, Oct 18: Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board Chairperson Salma has underlined the need for society to change its outlook towards the ''third gender'' by extending some compassion towards them.
Speaking at a function here yesterday, she said the exclusive welfare board established by the State Government for the ''third gender'' would serve the purpose of providing them an identity in the society.
She also pointed out the debates on the rights of the Aravanis that had taken place, in the wake of the formation of the Welfare Board, need to be emulated in the rest of the country.
Ms Salma hoped the awareness being created through the Social Work Departments of Colleges all over the State would help in integrating them as equals in the society.
District Collector T Soundiah called for unity among the Aravanis and urged them to extend cooperation to make the government welfare schemes directed towards their socio-economic progression a success.
