Raju underlines need for fast track construction of roads, bridges
New Delhi, Oct 18 (UNI) Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju said today said there was a crying need for fast track construction and adoption of newer techniques, without compromising on safety and environmental issues.
This can be achieved by better planning and faster dissemination of knowledge and experiences within the engineering fraternity, he said while addressing an international seminar on ''Latest Trends in Bridge Construction'', organised by Indian Institution of Bridge Engineers in collaboration with Border Roads Organisation.
He said number of vehicles has been growing at an average of ten per cent per annum over the last five years and the infrastructure demands have shot up manifold.
He said, ''Highways and Railways are the arteries through which much of a nation's economic and social development flows. They provide links for the transfer of goods and materials, ready means of passage for increasingly mobile populations. Bridges too are the key elements and deserve the maximum attention.'' He commended the Indian Institution of Bridge Engineers for bringing together practising engineers, designers, equipment manufacturers and construction agencies on one platform to interact and exchange ideas and benefit from the engineering fraternity.
