BMC to generate Methane from Gorai dumping ground
Mumbai, Oct 17 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will earn 1.63 million carbon credit (CER) through the generation of Methane gas from its 19.96 hectares dumping ground at Gorai.
Addressing mediapersons here today, BMC Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak said that the CER would contribute in reduction of global warming and the corporation is expected to earn Rs 65.5 crore at the minimum rate of USD ten per CER, as assured by the World Bank.
The Gorai closure project is likely to be completed by the end of December this year, whereby 40 wells will be dug for the Methane extraction and the corporation would start earning carbon credit from May 2009.
The corporation is also trying to generate electricity from Methane gas, he added.
