Virdhawal picks up one gold, silver in pool

Pune, Oct 16 (UNI) Virdhawal Khade for the second day running, had mixed luck winning one gold, while having to be satisfied with a silver in the second event on the fifth day of the third edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games being held at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City, Balewadi here today.

Virdhawal, who had lost to Ryan Napolean of Australia in yesterday's 200m freestyle final, got his revenge by winning the 100m freestyle final today breaking his own games record created in the heats in the process.

The young Indian sensation, who had bagged gold in yesterday's 50m butterfly, had to be satisfied with the silver in the 100m butterfly today.

Virdhawal was off the blocks in a flash in the 100m freestyle final and led from the beginning to the end to finish the race in a new games record of 49.47 seconds, with Ryan Napoleon of Australia coming in second in a much slower time of 50.66 second, while Thomas Barrett, also of Australia, took the silver in a time of 51.05 seconds.

Lachlan Staples gave Australia another gold in the pool as he piped local star Virdhawal winning in a new games record of 53.63 seconds to win the race.

Virdhawal had to be satisfied with silver coming home in a time of 54.01 seconds, while Daniel Scott of Scotland came in third to win the bronze in 54.86 seconds.
