Salem, Oct 16: The Vazhanthu Kattuvom project, which equips poor to earn daily wages has extended its coverage to 117 villages in four blocks in Salem district. Thirty-two villages in Ayodhyapattinam block, 36 villages in Peddanaickanpalayam, 14 villages in Gengavalli and 32 villages in Talavasal are being covered under the project currently.
The project, launched in Salem in 2006-07, aims at developing and strengthening pro-poor local institutions, equipping the poor with skills, and providing financial assistance for development programmes. The project also extends assistance to the committee members in the areas of skill development, marketing and technology.
Sustained support is being provided under the project for the establishment and functioning of the Village Poverty Reduction Committees (VPRC). So far, Rs. 3.25 crore had been released to the VPRCs in Ayodhyapattinam and Peddanaickanpalayam blocks.
