Washington, Oct 16 : A secret incident, in which late Pope John Paul 2nd was attacked by a knife-wielding priest, has been revealed in a shocking new documentary.

The former pontiff's private secretary, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, in a film based on his memoirs, revealed the 1982 incident, which John Paul had insisted should remain a secret.

The film 'Testimony' will be premiered by the current Cardinal of Krakow in Poland for John Paul's successor, Pope Benedict, at the Vatican in Rome, Italy on October 16.

As per the documentary, which was narrated by actor Michael York, Cardinal Dziwisz revealed that Spanish priest Juan Fernandez Krohn attempted to kill the Pope during a trip to Portugal.

The attempt had been made on the day after the first anniversary of gunman Mehmet Ali Agca's assassination attempt.

"I can now reveal that the Holy Father was wounded... There was blood," Contactmusic quoted the cardinal as saying.

Krohn was reportedly arrested and served several years in a Portuguese prison, and was later expelled from the country.
