Gangtok, Oct 16 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Bank and New Delhi Heroes stormed into the quarterfinals of the 30th edition of All India Governor's Gold Cup, winning their respective matches at Paljor stadium here today.
J&K Bank ended the dreams of the home team, United Sikkim, with a 2-0 victory.
S Rizwan pounced on a loose ball to slam home the first goal, stunning a huge home crowd.
USSC quickly regrouped and went into search for an equaliser and came very close on two occasions in quick succession.
A well crafted move between USSC's Nigerian recruits Collins and Ike placed the former into a very good position but could not finish the job. Moments earlier, Eze's header was goal bound but the bankmen's goalkeeper managed to make an excellent save.
Minutes later, a defensive error saw J&K Bank Nigerian recruit Ibrahim get past two USSC defenders and pulled the ball back for Satwinder Singh to score the second goal for his team.
J&K Bank will now meet Army XI in the quarterfinals on October 18.
In another match, New Delhi Heroes took an early lead in the fifth minute through a long ranger from Itaue. L Daniel equalised for Mohan Bagan SAIL in the 34th minute through penalty.
In the 55th minute, Praveen Kumar made it 2-1 for the Kolkata side with a fine header. However, Mohan Bagan SAIL could not cling on to its one goal lead and conceded an equaliser in the 72nd minute.
It was Itaue again who scored for the Delhi side with a penalty.
The game ended in 2-2 draw and the match was decided via tie-breaker which the Delhi side won 4-2.
New Delhi Heroes now face Kerala club, Titanium, on October 20.
