Mumbai, Oct 15 (UNI) Shiv Sena Executive president Uddhav Thackeray today laid the foundation stone for 'Amar Jawanjyot', a memorial of two heroes of 1857 war, near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) in south Mumbai.

Speaking at the function, Mr Thackeray said the two heroes -- Mangal Gadiya and Sayed Hussain-- had in reality launched the struggle for independence of India in the year 1857.

Both the Hindus and Muslim had jointly fought for the independence of the country and they never brought religion in their mind at that time. But, now ironically Maharashtra had become number one state in the list of communal riot-hit states in the country, he said.

''This smarak would be an inspiration for the Mumbaikars, we should join hands together to fight terrorism in the state,'' he said.

Earlier, BMC commissioner Jairaj Phatak said, ''To commemorate the contribution of Mangal Gadiya and Sayed Hussain, who were gunned down by Britishers near the Azad Maidan during the war, we have decided to built a 'Amar Jawanjyot' on a 400 sq meters area near CST from the Member of Parliament fund of Bharat Kumar Raut. The memorial would cost around Rs 25 lakh.'' At the function, City Mayor Shobha Raul, BJP city president Gopal Shetty, standing committee chairman Ravindra Raikar and other top officials of the Corporation were present.
