Pune, Oct 15 (UNI) Poovamm Machettra, who represented the country in the Beijing Olympics recently, however, could not affirm her form and had to rest contend with a silver in the women's 400 meters race at the Commonwealth Youth ames being held at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City, Balewadi here today.
The event was won by Zambia's Rachael Nachula who clocked 52.97 seconds and set a new games record in the process.
Poovamm finished the race in a time of 55.17 seconds to be placed second for the silver medal, while Rachael's sister Rebecca Nachula claimed the bronze with a time of 55.20 seconds.
The corresponding 400 meters for men was won by Grenada's James Kirani who breached past the finish in a time of 46.56 seconds and in the process posted a new games record.
Elvis Ukale of Nigeria, who finished in a time of 47.16 seconds, took the silver and Jordan McGrath of England bagged the bronze in a time of 47.25 seconds.
In the long jump event, India's Aishwarya Govindappa missed a medal finishing fourth with her best jump being 5.75 meters, while the gold medal winner Abigail Irozuru of England leapt to a distance of 5.92. Hannah Lewis of Northern Ireland winning the silver with a leap of 5.85 meters. The bronze was bagged by Mariah Ririnui of New Zealand with a leap of 5.82 meters.
