Indian 4x100 women's relay team bags gold

Pune, Oct 15 (UNI) The Indian women 4x100 relay team gave India its only gold of the day in the track and field event, while Poovamm Machettra who represented the country in the Beijing Olympics recently, had to rest contend with a silver in the women's 400 meter race at the Commonwealth Youth Games being held at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City, Balewadi here today.

India also got a bronze through Arjun Kumar in the discus throw event with a throw of 52.02 which was won by Australian Julian Wruck with a new games record throw of 60.88. England's Curtis Griffith got the silver with a throw of 55.35.

However, all the attention was in the 4x100 meters women's relay where the Indian team beat Australia, who had to be contend with the silver, to give the host nation another gold. Canada bagged the bronze medal.

The 400 meters for men was won by Grenada's James Kirani who breached past the finish in a time of 46.56 and in the process posted a new games record. Elvis Ukale of Nigeria who finished in a time of 47.16 seconds took the silver and Jordan McGrath of England bagged the bronze in a time of 47.25 seconds.

In the women's long jump event, India's Aishwarya Govindappa missed a medal finishing fourth with her best jump being 5.75 meters, while the gold medal winner Abigail Irozuru of England leapt to a distance of 5.92. Hannah Lewis of Northern Ireland winning the silver with a leap of 5.85 meters. The bronze was bagged by Mariah Ririnui of New Zealand with a leap of 5.82 meters.
