With TCS striking the second largest e-governance deal with the government, this Rs 1,000 crore e-project will enable citizens to get passports in just three days. The application process for passports will be fully computerised. Passports applied under the Tatkal scheme would be delivered in one day.
The project will be implemented by March 2009 and country wide roll out of the services will take place within six years. TCS will also open 77 passport filing centers across India by January next year. The communication between police and passport office too would be done online and a secure network is being created.
Bangalore and Chandigarh would be the first to get the new Passport Seva Kendras by June 2009 on a pilot basis.
With this deal, passport applications are expected to touch 1 crore by 2011. So, lets keep our fingers crossed and wait for the best....
