London, Oct 13 : Conservationists in Kenya have used a hi-tech method to stop endangered elephants from raiding nearby farms, by fitting them with a collar containing a mobile phone sim card, which would make the tuskers send text messages to forest wardens.

According to a report in The Sun, the 'Save the Elephants' group devised the method to stop the endangered beasts raiding nearby farms.

The sim card, which has been fitted inside the collars of some elephants, uses GPS (Global Positioning System) to cover the boundaries of the conservatories.

Whenever an elephant fitted with the hi-tech collar goes on a late night raid, it sends on-call wardens a text message with its co-ordinates so they can go and head him off.

An example of an elephant who has been tracked using this technology is Kimani.

Kimani has been intercepted 15 times since he was fitted with the mobile device and now, despite once being a nightly raider, he has not been near a farm in four months.
