Grand unification of AGP on Tuesday

Guwahati, Oct 12 (UNI) The grand unification of the main opposition party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will take place on Tuesday at Golaghat where the party was founded on the same day 23 years ago.

This morning the AGP, AGP (P), TGP and PLP were humming with activities as all these were merging back to the AGP-fold.

This morning, AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary was elected leader of the AGP legislature party and then in an executive meeting, he once again endorsed the unification decision.

Later, addressing a separate press conference, Mr Patowary and AGP(P) president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said they had decided to come together for the sake of regional unity.

Twenty-three years ago, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) was born at the historic playground at Golaghat in front of lakhs of people, after signing of the historic Assam Accord. On the same general playground of Golaghat, the unification of like-minded parties was scheduled to materialise.

Mr Mahanta along with Trinamul Gana Parishad leader Pulakesh Barua, PLP leader Pabindra Deka and other AGP leaders such as Biraj Kumar Sarma, Rekharani Das Boro, would join the unification programme of AGP.

Meanwhile, a strong preparation committee has been constituted for the 23rd Fundation Day. The programmes included flag-hoisting, 'swahid tarpan', 'smriti tarpan' and felicitation.

The flag of the AGP would be unfurled by Chandra Mohan Patowary.

'Smriti tarpan' would be offered by Phani Bhusan Choudhury, working president Brindaban Goswami, ex-president, AGP and Thaneswar Boro.

The main platform has been named in memory of late Lalit Chandra Rajkhowa.

The other platforms have been offered in the name of late Poragdhar Chaliha, late Noren Tanti and late Surendra Nath Medhi.

The main gate has been constructed in the name of the memory of late Nagen Sarma. The 'smriti chora' was being constructed in memory of late Dr Lakshmi Barua and late Mohendra Nath Saikia.

Mr Phoni Bhushan Choudhury, working president of AGP, informed that a total of 50,000 people would attend the function.
