Kolkata, Oct 12 (UNI) Durga puja is not the only time to rejoice but also to sensitise the people on global warming.
Durga Puja witnesses enthusiastic participation of people irrespective of caste, creed and gender. They worship her as the Goddess comes to the abode of her parents.
On the occassion several puja pandals are erected portraying different themes and some even take up burning issues like global warming.
As per an estimate at least ten puja pandals substantially focussed on the subject as the organisers realised that global warming is a sensitive issue and needs public attention to redress the problem.
Many vigilant citizens at the city's Salt Lake puja pandal in FD park feels that global warming is an important issue facing mankind and if immediate attention was not paid to check the menace, it might result in submergence of several inhabited islands including Mumbai, Maldives and Pacific Nations like Kirbatti Nauru and Palau into sea water.
Prominent pandals like Mohammad Ali park, Salt Lake, Alipore and Deshpriya park had themes like global warming, air pollution and environmental protection.
The organisers here mainly concentrated on the need of turning the city and its hinterland into a green belt by checking green house effect and thereby reduce the impact of global warming. This is considered to be the main reason for the rising sea levels owing to the heating of the earth and leading to constant melting of icebergs in the polar regions.
'' We hope that the portrayal of such an issue during festivities would raise awareness among the masses and serve the purpose, '' one of the organisers at Mohammad Ali park said.
